"Tax prep costing the poor"
Tue, 11/03/2009 - 09:42 — kiteflyer0
Arkansas Advocates for Children and Family released a report today that said ignorance of the federal earned income tax credit and triple-digit interest rapid refunds charged by tax return preparers are costing the state’s low income population $200 million a year.

Helaman: PTB is making progress towards solving this problem...
As we learn about the unnecessary costs incurred by low-income people in Arkansas, as cited in the piece that Kiteflyer posted, it is hope-inspiring and motivating to see the progress we’re making at Progress Through Business in providing free tax preparation services in Madison and other places.
A couple of highlights are:
- We were approved for a grant from the IRS to help fund some of the 7 VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistant) sites we support
- We’re seeing an increase in those interested in working at VITA sites, as evidenced by the 46 in attendance at a training meeting in Madison on Saturday, which is a significant improvement from the average of 15 that usually attend these trainings
